More Fall Colors

It's Snowing!

Today it is snowing. If you look closely at the pictures, you can see the snowflakes. This is our FIRST Massachusetts snowfall. I'm holding my breath, because I hope this winter will be mild. Even though I grew up in Idaho and endured many, many COLD winters; living in California was so nice. Our winters in Elk Grove were wet from rain, but never snow. I'm sure you can tell, I'm not excited for the coming winter months. However, LAUREN is in heaven. She can't wait to go sledding. Okay, I can't wait to take the girls sledding, but I will also love to come home to a warm mug of hot chocolate.

The Holidays Are Here

Saturday, November 18, we bundled up and took the train into the city for our first night of Christmas festivities. The large Christmas tree outside Faneuil Hall was going to be lit for the first time. We joined up with some good friends to enjoy the night (Thanks Greta and Eric). It was really cold!

When the tree was lit, confetti was shot through the air to give the effect of snow. It was fun and the kids loved it! You can see the pure joy and excitement on Lauren's face.

Afterwards, we decided to eat dinner at Wagamama. Elle tried so hard to eat with chopsticks.

I will try not to say Merry Christmas until Friday!

Clean Up On Aisle 6

Elle and I went grocery shopping this morning. She has decided that she will NOT sit in the cart, but will walk. This usually includes touching everything possible, and trying to buy and literally throw into the cart anything interesting. I am usually scurrying back and forth to put things back and telling her, NO! Today, the inevitable happened. A HUGE jar of sweet pickles were too heavy for her to carry. The jar landed broken in pieces on the floor. It must have scarred Elle, because she sat in the cart for the rest of our shopping outing. I still smell pickles. I'm not sure if I'll go back to that store for awhile.

New England Aquarium

The Brookline and Boston public libraries offer residents and those holding a library card Museum Passes to local museums. It is so great! Sometimes the pass covers the cost of admission. Other times, one has to pay a small amount in comparison to the regular price of admission. Saturday we took advantage of one Museum Pass and visited the New England Aquarium. Lauren and Elle loved everything, especially touching the real star fish and sea urchins in the "Edge of the Sea" exhibit. They had an enormous turtle that I thought was great.

On our way, we visited a favorite local Italian restaurant, Galleria Umberto, in the North End for lunch. This eatery is known for excellent Italian food - pizza, calzones, etc., for cheap. It also closes around 2:30 or whenever the food runs out. It rarely has tourists, and the locals love it.

After the aquarium, we walked over to Faneuil Hall for dinner and had a delicious Beard Papa cream puff for dessert. It was a cold day in the 30's (I am NOT looking forward to the cold winter, here in New England)! Elle was also adamant about NOT wearing her coat during part of the day, so that was a not a highlight. I felt like a terrible mother letting my two-year-old run around outside in the cold.... but she was happy has ever. It had been a fun day.

Halloween 2007

Our family jack-o-lantern was designed by Brandon and Lauren. Lauren wanted a happy one, and Brandon did a stellar job of carving the pumpkin.

The girls dressed up as a witch (cute not scary) and Minnie Mouse. Elle would tell everyone she was "Mickie Mouse." We had a really fun time trick-or-treating to the homes near our apartment. Most of the homes decorated their porches with jack-o-lanterns and spooky things. One house even handed out BIG candy bars which is always a bonus!


Our friends at our ward Halloween party (a few days earlier) dressed up with the Peter Pan theme. Mik (crocodile) Paper-mached his head, and note his face makeup in between the jaws (the ticking clock). So creative! Tiffany (Captain Hook) had dreadlocks which worked out well for Hook's hair (can you believe I have a good friend with dreads?). The kids also looked great as Tinkerbell and Peter Pan. These costumes were so great!

2007 World Series Champions

Brandon and I have been converted. We have never watched more baseball on TV before. Maybe it helped to have the Boston Red Sox win the World Series last night! We were lucky enough to attend a few games this season, thanks to being at the right place at the right time while tickets were available through the hospital. Brandon took some great photos.

Before we moved, a few people asked us if we liked sports, because Boston is a "sports city." They were right! Not only do they love the Red Sox, but the New England Patriots are playing great right now, the Celtics are just getting started, and I know there is a hockey team too....

Boston Pumpkin Festival

Saturday, Oct 20, 2007 - Boston has an annual Pumpkin Lighting Festival that we were able to see. There were rows and rows, thousands and thousands of carved pumpkins. Many were very basic... just happy to be carved. But many were elaborate and worth taking a picture of to remember. Our pictures don't show how many pumpkins were carved, but gives maybe a small glimpse.

Concord

Monday, Oct 8, 2007 (Columbus Day)- We actually left our apartment that morning, not knowing where we were going to spend the day. Both Brandon and Lauren had the day off from work and school. We ended up driving to Concord and Lexington, MA for a lesson in US History! It was overcast, but a nice fall day in New England.

First, we visited Concord, Mass. This is the home of the first battles of the Revolutionary War and of famous literary authors Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry D. Thoreau, and Lousia May Alcott. At the Concord Museum, Lauren & Elle were able to go on a picture scavenger hunt provided by the museum. During our visit, we found Paul Revere's lantern that hung in the Old North Church in Boston to warn of the British advance (how do they KNOW it is authentic?!).

We then went to see the Old North Bridge where the so-called "shot heard round the world," (from Emerson's Concord Hymn) happened. This sight was amazingly beautiful. I told Brandon that I could feel the reverence or the history there, and he agreed saying it had the feeling of a cemetery in a way. The Minute Man Statue represents the local community members who fought against the British during these battles. The countryside had old trees that were ancient enough to have witnessed the battles... and now Brandon, Lauren, and Elle have left there marks on one of the old trees.

After seeing these amazing sights we visited the famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery which houses the remains of Emerson, Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Alcott. There graves aren't elaborate due to their "naturalist" beliefs and are kept on Author's Ridge within the cemetery.

On our way home we took in the changing fall colors and stopped at a local farm for apple doughnuts and a free haunted hayride. It was the perfect way to end the day.

Sight-seeing in Rockport

Thursday, Sept 13, 2007- Lauren didn't have to go to school because of the Jewish Holiday, Rosh Hashana. On the school calendar it was referred to as a "Day of Low Attendance," due to the many Jewish people in the Brookline community that would not be attending school that day. Luckily, Brandon has easy Thursdays during this rotation. He only had to work ONE hour in the morning.

So we took the day to drive up to Rockport, Mass. It is on Cape Ann (the other Cape of MA). We drove through Gloucester (ryhmes with roster, foster, etc... don't ask me why) which is the fishing town patterned after in the movie, "The Perfect Storm." Of course it is right on the beach and has a large fishing port. It isn't too touristy but has a beautiful coast line. The area and towns we visited made me think of "Pete's Dragon," and the town of Passamaquoddy (which is an actual city on the coast of Maine). I need to watch that movie again!

After Gloucester we drove up to Rockport. It is a beatiful town with little shops lining "Bearskin Neck." We ate a delicious lunch of fish and chips, clam chowder, and crab cakes. I wish I had some of that to eat right now.... I'll go back just to have lunch again! We also saw the famous Motif No. 1, which is the most painted building in America. In actuality it is a faded fishing shed that isn't that incredible to see, but due to it's popularity, we took a few pictures of our own.

We headed up to Halibut Point State Park which was once a center for granite excavation and has a rocky coastline with large boulders.

We had a nice day, even though Lauren was hugely disappointed that we weren't able to play in the sand. Brandon and I will have to make it a priority the next time we go.
